LUMINULTRA ATP® 2nd Generation
2nd Generation ATP® – Your First Line of Defense
2nd generation ATP® monitoring offers a powerful combination of speed, versatility, portability and precision for microbiological testing in water. All living cells contain ATP, regardless of whether they are bacteria, fungi or any other type of microbe. As such, its measurement is a direct indication of the microbiological content of your sample. Achieving complete results in a few minutes provides very important features for greater microbiological control.
Where there is water, there is a risk of microbiological contamination. When this risk is not monitored, contamination can manifest itself and create major problems, including risks to public health, equipment failures and infrastructure degradation. The 2nd Generation LuminUltra ATP® is a low-cost, easy-to-use microbiological analysis technology that is fast, reliable and produces results in just a few minutes. It has multiple applications in the water sector as well, in all industries that use water-based or other fluids in their process.
Traditional methods based on culture media are very time-consuming (a few days to get results) and very selective (less than 1% of the total population is detected). The 2nd Generation ATP® device measures all cells to ensure no threat goes unnoticed and results are immediately available.
Traditional ATP tests provide the required pass / fail indication for surface hygiene applications. LuminUltra’s 2nd generation ATP technology goes far beyond the 1st generation products because through greater sensitivity and accuracy, it provides the fully quantitative measurement required for any sample of water or effluent.
Depending on the application, measurements of suspended solids (including turbidity and particle counts) may be used to indicate general cargo in wastewater or perhaps sediment (water) intrusion, but do not isolate the microbiological contents. As such, they are not effective ways of investigating microbiological issues and can sometimes be misleading. 2nd generation ATP monitoring quantifies the biological content of these samples, allowing the issue to be characterized and optimized much more effectively.
What are the Benefits?
The 2nd Generation LuminUltra ATP® test solution measures all microorganisms, guaranteed as soon as no threat goes unnoticed. With results available at the moment, in just a few minutes (10 minutes), the infrastructure management / maintenance team can perform rapid and efficient microbiological monitoring, and create first-line control and defense strategies.

LuminUltra’s solutions combine the revolutionary 2nd generation ATP® test methods with rugged, portable equipment and direct application software with decades of experience. This allows us to provide a unique solution tailored to your application and to give a precise answer to the most important question: “will I have the microorganisms under control?”
Treatment and supply of water for human consumption (public and private entities).
Biofilms form a barrier that consumes disinfectants and protects the microbiological community. This means a significant increase in the risk of microbiological proliferation. In chlorinated systems, nitrifying bacteria present an even greater challenge because they can not be grown using traditional plate counting methods. In these cases, due to its rapid feedback, full measurement and portability, 2nd Generation ATP monitoring is the right tool when compared to traditional testing methods.
For field control activities, technicians have many tools, but microbiological field tests have never been a reality until now. The 2nd Generation ATP tests allow technicians to evaluate the microbiological quality of the water during the washing and maintenance activities in the field in order to know the needs for additional attention or cleanliness of conduits (Link to Hydrogel). This not only reduces waste of water, but also optimizes operations, which leads to a cost reduction.
Microbiological monitoring can be used to evaluate the treatment potential of the filters. It can also be used to optimize the effectiveness of membrane filtration. Evaluating in minutes the permeability and microbiological fouling, comparing feeds, permeability and rejection. The maintenance schedules can be adjusted, thus maximizing the effectiveness of the treatment as well as the life of the filter modules.
Dealing with algal blooms can be a big challenge. The first step is to get an effective monitoring solution. The microbiological ATP2G monitoring of water at the source allows users to have an early warning of algal blooms. With the results available in minutes corrective action can be performed much more quickly than would be possible if you used the traditional test.
WWTPs: Wastewater Treatment Plants (municipal and industrial).
Without assessing the quantity and quality of biomass, it is not possible to know the impacts of toxicity. Generally these impacts are known too late in the loss of effluent quality.
The LuminUltra QG21W test kit immediately reveals the onset of toxicity, allowing you to quickly identify and mitigate your source.
Variable costs of the process as aerial energy consumptions can be reduced by observing the response of the active biomass through the ATP results.
Handling of solids may be one of the most expensive aspects of wastewater treatment and, without knowing how much of the stored solids is actually alive, it is difficult to establish the ideal amount of effective control in order to avoid overfilling of bio- reactor. By evaluating the active biomass rate, it is possible to determine the percentage of live solids in minutes and thus guide the optimization process of the solids reduction system, keeping the biomass active enough.
Cooling Towers
Corrosion mechanisms are not always well understood, but their significant contribution to the growth of microorganisms is undeniable. High growth within the equipment inevitably results in biofilm formation. The community of microorganisms established in the biofilm degrades the equipment. A rigorous control program, backed by effective monitoring tools such as the 2nd Generation ATP, allows better and more effective control in order to avoid biofilm formation and reduce the risk of corrosion.
The growth of communities of microorganisms in cooling systems leads to the formation of biofilms that can pose serious health risks, such as legionnaires’ disease. Legionella testing is increasingly common in industrial and residential cooling systems, but Legionella’s positive tests only reveal the problem after it has occurred. A more proactive approach is to use rapid microbiological risk assessment monitoring that allows rapid action whenever there is an increase above safe levels of microbiological growth.
Using ATP2G monitoring to keep microbiological growth at a low level preemptively mitigates biofilm formation and the threat of Legionella proliferation.
Inefficient monitoring in water cooling systems often results in biofilm formation, which is difficult to remove. Biofilm formation usually results in chemical treatments to destroy it, which can come out much more expensive than making an effective initial control program. Fast and better information can lead to better control!
The fast and reliable results of LuminUltra monitoring can avoid the need for frequent chemical cleaning and ensure that routine maintenance strategies are effective and sufficient.
Traditional microbiological testing methods for cooling waters tend to consume a lot of waiting time until results are achieved. They may not be effective in quantifying the risk. Instead of spending several days to acquire data that is essential to maintaining system integrity, with LuminUltra testing we have quick feedback that allows you to target mitigation activities at the time and place.
Industrial Process Fluids
Whether for final product testing or wash, rinse, or industrial process water analysis, 2nd generation ATP testing can serve as the first line of assessment and microbiological defense, ensuring the effectiveness of control programs. Rapid monitoring tests applied at critical control points allow immediate mitigation in the event of contamination events occurring.
The choice and dosage of biocides may depend on many factors and conducting studies to optimize these variables can be very time consuming due to the slow feedback from the culture tests. In addition, culture tests tend to provide a rather conservative indication of the efficacy of the biocide, since live non-cultured and / or inactive live cells that may later become active are not quantified in these tests. ATP2G tests provide a more conservative indication of the efficacy of the biocide, since they detect all living (and non-arable) cells, and, do so in minutes instead of days.
Many problems of chemical odors are linked to the microbiological growth inside them. This type of problem probably originated long before the odor’s perceptiveness. Isolate and mitigate these problems much earlier by rapid microbiological testing.
